Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Squirrel Island on the Garden River

We anchored in a Garden River last night, 14 miles east of Sault Ste Marie and yet there was no internet access (N46 31.101' and W084 06.704'). Today it is raining and thundering and since it is the Captain's birthday,we are staying at our very first marina.  Yes folks, we brought out the wallet and we are paying at Roberta Bondar Marina in Sault Ste Marie. This is a city run marina and it is only 1.10 per foot and it includes internet, showers and there is a clean coin laundry.  The museum ship Norgoma is here so we will have to take a look at that.
There are large laker ships entering the locks on the American side so it may be a little noisy.  The lock on the Canadian side is strictly for pleasure crafts.
We will ride over to the US to see about our cruising permit once the rain lets up.

  1. WHAT is the Captain sewing? And where did you get that old Singer? Mom was here today and we went through ALL the pictures and blogs. She loved it. Do you go back down to Drummond to get to Lake Michigan?
