Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

White Lake, Michigan

We got up at 6:00 while it was still dark,we were trying to get a 3 hour window to get to Grand Haven. It was a perfect sunrise and White lake was a sheet of glass.  We headed out to Lake Michigan less than a mile away and mother nature was busy unleashing her fury on the lake.  The waves were already 2-4 feet and the wind was up with some white caps, we headed out anyways since the wind was on our bow. We got a mile down the lake and high tailed it back to White Lake.  We can not go today, tomorrow or even Thursday.
We found a nicer anchorage farther down White Lake but pulled in to the Municipal Marina so we could go into town for provisions.  They said it was OK to stay for a few hours while we took car of this. We have since decided to stay at the marina since the wind is up even on this lake which could make for an uncomfortable night.
There are two towns here,Whitehall on the south side of the lake and Montigue on the North side.  There is a fabulous grocery store on the Montigue side as well as nice bicycle trails.  Whitehall also has bicycle trails so we will explore these further during our forced extended stay.  It is not a bad place to be stuck, great protection from the elements and there are 2 other Loopers to talk to. The marina has a total of 5 boats yet all other 5 marinas appear to be full?
We saw a doe and her two fawns om the bicycle trail this afternoon.  We also found a second hand store where I picked up another book.
The weather is great other than this high wind which I understand is typical of Lake Michigan.
More about this windy adventure tomorrow. The internet is slow so I will post pictures at an other time.
