Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Florida

We crossed into Florida yesterday and anchored at Fort McRee (N30 19.649' and W87 19.188') with our Canadian Friend, Randy. We dinghied over to the beach to visit the fort remains. The beach was gorgeous with lots of shells for the picking. Jerry got some of the fine sand to apply to his deck repairs.
The anchorage is not that well protected and he navy is constantly flying over which makes for a lot of noise during the day. It was quite windy so one of the campers asked if we would make her a pot of coffee as she was having trouble starting a fire.  She came over on a jet ski with all the fixings, I just brewed it for her on the stove. She comes camping here every year at this time because the red fish are running.  You fish at dusk into the early night.  Jerry and Randy got their fishing license on line and out they went. The wind freshened and he temperature dropped, they both came back soaked.  Randy caught something that he was able to take back and eat. When darkness came some small boats were going back and forth in the anchorage fishing with spears and a light.  Not sure what that was all about but we did fear for our anchor line for a while.
The shoreline is quite populated now and dolphins are everywhere. We are heading out tomorrow but not sure where we will end up.
