Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

York Island Fort Meyer's Florida

We were finally able to get the laundry done in Venice yesterday.  We tied up to a free dock in town and rode our bikes 2 miles to the laundry mat. It started to peck as we were getting there and once inside, the skies opened up and he rain came down in sheets.  Once we had completed the deed, the sun came out and we were able to get back to the boat with dry laundry.
We had to get off the free dock by night fall so it was a rush to push off and drop the hook just to the north of the Venice Yacht Club (N26 06.7100 and W82 27.6007').
We finally got some good pictures of dolphins today as we made our way to York Island Natural preserve. It was a little choppy on Charlotte Harbor so we stopped for lunch at Pelican Bay.  A beautiful anchorage but the first mate forgot about the dinghy and North Star chewed up the rope as we were anchoring. Luckily, a small boat came by and retrieved our dinghy for us. If you can't take a joke, don't travel with this first mate.
We are now anchored at York Island (N26 41.3269' and W82 14.6025'), Jerry is fishing but it looks like I better make some supper.
Tomorrow we are heading 5 miles into Fort Myers.

  1. Wow! You have some great shots of those dolphins. They are so beautiful and graceful, aren't they! You're still catching some lovely sunsets as well. So glad you finally got the laundry done......y'all were probably running out of undies....lol. Perhaps the first mate should go back to school for a bit! Ha!
We had a foot of snow yesterday which will hopefully melt by the weekend....
