Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Last day at Turner Marine

It has been quite a productive stay at Turner Marine in sunny Mobile Bay. The Captain took advantage of the exceptionally low tide to repack the stuffing box thing. He kept having to re tighten it to stop a pesky leak. He thought he would have to have the boat taken out of the water to correct the problem but since we could not sink more than a foot at low tide he did the deed and all is well again.
In an effort to make more room in the boat, we chopped the legs off the table and converted it to a pedestal table that can easily be moved to the outside deck mount. I will need to make a cover for it so we can leave it outside until such time as we need to eat inside.  Jerry is also making me a bit more storage space in the rafters to free up some space in a drawer that will free up some counter space. We are looking forward to reaching our other boat where we will drop off more items that are not required. Are you getting the impression that we are feeling cramped? It is better to be cramped than to be a landlubber.
We have been enjoying the southern food and the warm hospitality. All the loopers and circumnavigators were invited to the Yacht Club for dinner and yet an other Halloween party.  The food was really good but the live music was a little loud to be able to carry on much of a conversation.
We enjoyed the marina but it is time to seek out new peaceful anchorages. The choices are endless from here on. We have chosen Perdito Key where we can anchor in a sandy bottom and dinghy ashore for a swim at the beach. The Key is West of Pensacola Florida in Big Lagoon, it is part of the National Seashore in an undeveloped area. My kind of place.

Hopefully we will have Internet access. We are no longer river rats but instead we will be beach bums.
Happy Halloween!
