Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Enterprise Oxbow anchorage on the Waccamaw River

We are happy to leave the marshland and salt flats behind.  There was not much wildlife in there. We are just outside of Myrtle Beach and the scenery has improved greatly. There are trees although no more palm trees. We are back among the cypress, slash pines and various deciduous trees in their spring colour.
We are anchored in Enterprise Oxbow (N33 39.9 and W79 4.3) on the Waccamaw River, still in South Carolina.

We saw lots of dolphins today and we were surprised to see an alligator this far north.  The osprey are back as well as eagles and even an American swallow-tailed kite. I did see a Willet yesterday but the bird life were few and far between.
The weather is supposed to get wetter and cool down.  It is 90 degrees here today. We have reservations for Osprey Marina in Myrtle Beach. The rate is really good and the fuel price id the lowest around.  We will most likely stay a week while we rendez-vous with Bruce and Anne, our friends from Belleville.
