Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Little Wicomico River off Chesapeake Bay

Entering Chesapeake
We had a nice day on the water yesterday so we travelled 80 miles.  Chesapeake Bay is one of those hurtles we must cross so we will try to do it as quickly as possible. We passed a large naval base as we came  out of Norfolk and after that the scenery was pretty much water, other cruisers who are trying to head north and interesting navigational lights. The bay is 207 miles long and at times 30 feet wide.

Little Wicomico River anchorage

We arrived at our anchorage on Little Wicomico River (N37 53.5 and W76 15.9), in Maryland, at supper time and the Internet was not great so I did not post a blog. We thought we would have to stay an extra day due to the weather but I got up early and checked Passage Weather and decided that we would try it. It is overcast with 10-15 knot winds on the stern so we are going for it.  We had some rain earlier but we are warm and dry in the boat. The winds are supposed to drop down this afternoon so all is well. It can't be too bad since I am posting the blog as we travel. The wind has dropped off to 5-10 now.
The weather is supposed to deteriorate tomorrow so hopefully we make it to Rock Hall town dock to wait out the weather. There are anchorages and marinas all along both shores of the Chesapeake Bay so if it gets rough you just pull in.
