Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Couchiching

We stayed at the Port of Orillia last night.  We went out for dinner and met some nice folks so we were late getting back to the boat.  We felt it was prudent to just stay put.
The Port of Orillia is a municipally run marina that is really quite nice. The rates are quite reasonable and if you stay 3 nights, the third night is free. The showers and washrooms are clean and the staff very helpful. There is a nice boardwalk with a park and a 10 km bike trail that runs along lake Couchiching. This week end there is a Mariposa music festival in the park. Everything you need to provision is close by. There is a shuttle bus to take you to Casino Rama and a public bus stop to take you to a shopping center. They have the largest Home Hardware we have ever been into.
We are now anchored in the bay off Chief's Island so we can stay cool since we can walk on hard packed sand in 2-3 foot of water. It is a great place to swim since there are no weeds. Today is sunny and the forecast calls for 28 degrees, so far there is no breeze.
