Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Leaving Couchiching

We like Big Chief's so much that we reprovisioned yesterday in Orillia and we are back at anchor in Big Chief.  It is like a different place during the week when all the locals are back to work. There were only 3 of us here for the night.
Jerry is off this morning trying to catch a wise old bass that keeps teasing him. Jerry can almost reach out and touch him but he won't take the bait.  He did hook him twice but both times he got away. He already had two scars on him when Jerry hooked him and now he is sporting a hook and Jerry's leader. The old man and the sea would be proud of this fish, even Jerry says he deserves to live.
We will get underway when Jerry returns from his expedition. We will reach Port Severn after transiting 3 locks including the marine railway.  We will anchor at the lock and weather permitting enter Georgian Bay tomorrow. It was hot and muggy yesterday but the humidity has lifted and there is a light breeze from the Northwest and it is cooler, much better weather for locking through.

He wanted to race us but we declined
We gave him a head start
Where have all the locals gone...so peaceful

  1. Simone, your blog is great so far. I like how descriptive you are (not Jerry's forte, I'm sure). The pics are great as well and I have been saving quite a few of them. Better to do it now rather than wait until you have thousands of them....lol. Happy boating!
