Preparing for the trip

Captain Jerry has been making the final preparations to North Star, our 32 foot Cape Island down east trawler. We are anxious to leave our landlubber lives behind and begin our long awaited journey around the Great Circle. Join us as we travel 10, 000 kilometers: through the historic Trent Severn Waterway; the pristine waters of Georgian Bay; the North Channel of lake Huron; and hop from beach to beach on lake Michigan. We will visit Chicago and begin our trek along the rivers: Illinois; upper Mississippi; Ohio; Cumberland: Tennessee; Tenn-Tom Waterway and the Black Warrior. We will have transited through 68 locks at this juncture. We have chosen the inner route from Mobile Alabama to Tarpon Springs Florida and the shorter Ocheechobee Waterway to reach the East coast of Florida. We will skip over to the Bahamas to wait out the winter before heading North on the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway.
The 10 years of researching and planning are finally at an end and we invite you to come along on our adventure.

Perfect day for Lake Simcoe

We transited 6 locks in light rain yesterday. The locks were all ready and waiting for us since we had moved up from our anchorage on Mitchell lake to the Kirkfield lift lock to catch the first lift. I managed to cook french toast for a late breakfast once we passed the hole in the wall on Canal Lake. The sun came out as we were ready to cross Lake Simcoe.  This lake is to be respected so we checked the weather forecast and decided that 10 knots on the bow was a good crossing.  The waves were less than one meter and no traffic.
We arrived at Big Chief's Island and anchored there for a late lunch. We went to visit friends who have a nice property and dock on Lake Couchiching and ended up staying for dinner and for the night.
Today we are in Orillia doing some shopping and we will go anchor at Big Chief's Island for the night (N44 39.259' and W079 23.119').  This island is owned by First Nations and your are not permitted to go ashore but there is a large bay with sandy bottom and good holding.  The wind from the North West is not good but the bay is well protected from all other winds.  It can be a really wild party place on the week end when the locals come in with all types of boats to anchor for the week end.  We are told that a huge barge come out on the Canada day week end with a live band who played from 2 in the afternoon to 8 o'clock at night.  The bay is quite large and I am sure it can hold over 400 boats.  We will be staying for the week end to swim and party.
